The present book adopts a historical-analytical approach to trace the roots, formation, and consequences of the phenomenon known as “ISIS.” The author examines the historical background of sectarian divisions within the Islamic world and the influence of Salafi thought, analyzing the developments following the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq and the intensification of sectarian conflict. The work traces the organizational evolution of jihadist groups, from the experience in Afghanistan to the establishment of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the eventual declaration of a “caliphate,” taking into account domestic, regional, and international factors.
